Teachers and Discerners

we are to be careful and that we are not to be naive and trust without checking. Those who claim to follow the "Word" are not really following the Word. If you did follow the "Word", you would understand what the Bible says about discerning and how teachers should behave and at the same time how Christians are to test the spirits. Regarding TEACHERS: In Titus, I read that teachers are to: Show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose they may be ashamed because those have nothing bad to say about them. That teachers are to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. In 2 Corinthians 7:2 says that we "make room for others in our hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one." This is where "accountability" comes in. In Colossians 4:1-4 says: I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. Romans 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. At the same time, Christians are TO DISCERN: Proverbs 1:5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance- Proverbs 14:33 Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known. Proverbs 15:14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Proverbs 17:24 A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth. 1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Regarding "Showmanship", Jesus had to say something to teachers similar to Pharisees in Matthew 23:25-28

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

Paul warned us in his Corinthians letters: 1. 2 Corinthians 10:7-11 You are looking only on the surface of things. If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as he. For even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than pulling you down, I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. For some say, "His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing." Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present. 2. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. Its really interesting how people can be very receptive without checking because everything is pleasings to their eyes. As Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 5:10-11: Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? John said it perfectly how the "eyes" can be deceiving in 1 John 2:16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.
